Today is officially the first day of Winter. I know here in Ohio, it doesn’t feel a bit like Winter; it’s 63 and sunny. I’m not a huge fan of snow, but I love snow on my birthday (December 16th), Christmas Eve and Christmas. That’s just wishful thinking for this year, I’m sure.. Speaking of Winter, what an incredible time of the year to get married! So many color options to chose from. Some prefer bright traditional holiday colors, while others prefer toned down, light colors.
This year, we went the little nontraditional route in gingerbread making; we bought a gingerbread house kit from Target. I figured it would make things much simpler and less expensive than buying all of the supplies needed.
I just couldn’t seem to get the walls to stay standing, and one piece ended up falling and breaking. This made my son upset, so I told him maybe daddy would be better at making it! So, daddy and Christian sat down at the table, and didn’t move for two hours.. They were soo excited about their finished product, and I was pretty impressed! Christian told me they made that house for ME with love 🙂 my boy!
My husband did say, he didn’t like the gingerbread kit idea; it takes the creativity away from making your own special house.. So, next year we will opt for our usual graham crackers, icing and goodies!
4 days until Christmas!!
We have a little snowman block calender that counts down to Christmas.. As Christian was changing the numbers tonight from 08 to 07, he realized that there was only 7 days until Christmas.. He said that means ONE WEEK! He’s soo sweet, and soo excited for Santa to come! We have a fun, busy week planned ahead, but we still intend to have lots of fun 🙂 Do you have any special countdown traditions?!
Some may say it’s cheesy, but I think it’s what makes family traditions special.. This year, and every year from here on, I will be making matching shirts for all of us to wear! It will be darling on Christmas morning for us to all be wearing the same shirt; pictures will be so memorable! I’ve already made them for this year, and it was extremely simple! I was looking into buying some off Etsy.com but I couldn’t find any that were under $20 a piece. I also looked at Land’s End, Crazy 8 and Gymboree offer matching adult and children pajama’s but they were super pricey. I decided to check out Jo Ann’s just to see what they had, and everything ended up being 50% off that day, so I went ahead and bought the iron-on transfers. I shopped around for the best white, long sleeve shirts, and just opted for Hanes. For the kids, I did each of their first names and a cute ornament. For my husband and I, I just put ‘Mom’ and ‘ Dad’. It was quick and easy to do and ended up getting them all made, including shirts and transfers, for just about $30!! I’m really pleased with how they turned out, especially since this is the first time I’ve done it, but I have some great ideas in mind for next year!
Doing simple little things like these makes children look forward to more than just gifts for the holidays. It’s the excitement of the surprise that makes it soo special! Take an hour of your time and create something for your family and that you can all enjoy!
Today my son, Christian chose to make glitter play-dough out of the ‘fun’ jar! So we headed off to the dollar store to get the glitter! I had all of the other ingredients needed… The only glitter colors the dollar store had that we went to were red, green and silver, but we were happy with that! The other day, I posted a link to the site that I found the recipe on, but I will go ahead and put it on here again anyways…
Glitter Play- dough:
- 1 Cup flour
- 1 Cup water
- 1/4 Cup salt
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
- Food coloring or Kool-aid
- Pot and spatula
I doubled my recipe so that we could make a few different colors. Simply add everything to a mixing bowl, no specific order. Stir, making sure everything is completely mixed. Slightly warm a pot on medium to low heat, add mixture, then add food coloring (or kool-aid which makes it smell good and gives it color!), and lastly add a good amount of glitter. Stir, not letting it stick to the pan, and sort of flatten it with the spatula and flip over. Remove from heat, and let cool. I let mine cool on a plate. After a minute of it cooling, knead it a little to make sure it’s not too sticky or gooey. Let cool completely before letting your little ones play with. *If dough is still too gooey, just add back to the pot and cook a little bit longer. I also bought six small plastic containers with lids to store the play-dough in so it stays fresh!
We made purple-grape scented, red-cherry scented, yellow, green, blue and rainbow. This was extremely simple to do, quick and fun! It’s also by far the best play-dough I’ve ever played with. It doesn’t stick to anything and is very smooth! We will be making this again and again 🙂

Even though we’re nine days into December, it’s not too late to capture adorable Christmas card photos for this year or even for gifts! Below are a few of my favorite ideas… I absolutely love the idea with the kids holding hands in front of the bright Christmas tree, it’s just precious! I would love to take family photos outdoors with snow, even though it would be cold, it would be gorgeous! I would love to try this next year…
If you haven’t made your Christmas cards yet, the first step would be taking your photo, uploading it to your computer, and using a great site like shutterfly.com (my favorite!) to design your holiday greeting card! I had a lot of fun this year creating our cards, I picked two different designs! They both turned out adorable 🙂 It’s a great way to incorporate your favorite photo(s) and personalize with your own touch!
